the design of m0nkey.org

screen resolution
i designed this webpage to work at a modern screen resolution of 1024x768. if you're using something lower then go to best buy and buy yourself a nice shiny new monitor and/or computer that can handle 1024x768, it's really not that bad. everything i use (except for my laptop) runs at 1280x1024 so you're lucky i didn't design it for that (actually i used to but i'm nice and made it at least look ok on 1024x768.)
the c0de of m0nkey.org and behind the scenes
it's all PHP and MySQL. i suck at both but i think i'm leet with both so i try to write stupid shit and fail miserably. but it's a hobby and it gives me something to do besides viewing pr0n.

it's called L A M P.

the books i used to c0de this site:
  • PHP and MySQL Web Development, 1st edition Welling and Thompson, SAMS Publishing.

this book taught me pretty much everything i need to know about PHP. using what i learned from it i started with trival PHP hacks for stuff like 'Cell Phone Survivor' and then went on to make the whole m0nkey.org site. it was a great book but it came out in like 2001 and taught techniques that were good in PHP 3 and EARLY PHP 4, stuff that PHP 4.2 and later were moving away from, so I needed an upgrade. Unfortunately the 2nd edition of this book came out a bit too early for PHP 4.2 so some of the stuff in it like ($HTTP_POST_VARS or whatever it is) is in there instead of $_POST which is what PHP 4.3 and PHP 5 is moving to. still probably a good book though.

  • PHP5 and MySQL Bible Converse and Park, Wiley.

i just got this book the other day and it's fantastic. it covers a lot of the new features of PHP and good ways to think about PHP c0ding (like turning off $register_globals) and all kinds of other cool PHP stuff. i like it a lot. good times.

  • PHP Cookbook Sklar and Trachtenberg, O'Reilly.

A great reference guide with all kinds of code snip-its and HOWTOs on how to do common things. it helps you not have to think. yay for being lazy!
bandwidth requirements
this site is probably considered 'content rich' and 'bandwidth intensive'. or it could be 'devoid of content' if you're older than 13 and don't want to look at boobs all day. anyway this site has a lot of photos which may take some time to load. if you are on a dialup connection, well sucks to be you. move outta the farm and somewhere where you can get a DSL/cable modem. besides the photos and maybe an occasional video that i'll post the site is pretty low bandwidth. there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes via PHP and MySQL but since no one ever visits this site things fly when you load pages. yay!
the 3 versions of m0nkey.org
version 1.0 (may 2000 til sometime in 2003)
this version of the site had a ton of different looks and edits, but they were all static web pages. pretty lame and boring.
version 2.0 (sometime in 2003 til july 26th 2004)
started to play with PHP and developed a user authentication system, and then went from there adding comments, forums, etc. the only problem with it all was that behind the scenes it was all hacked together making edits a pain in the ass.
version 3.0 (july 26th 2004 til november 27th 2006)
this is the current revision of the website.

behind the scenes i fixed up a lot of the issue i had with the hacked together code and made a better framework for things like comments so now i make one change and it's reflected on the 7 different areas where comments are allowed. and i also brought the code up to date and pretty much conform with PHP 4.3 and greater standards for coding to improve security and speed. i had A LOT more planned for this version of the site but i didn't get around to it since apathy is far easier than work. now that the new site is running v3.0 maybe i'll get around to fixing some of the things that bugged me.
version 3.5 (november 27th 2006 til ?)
while working on v4.0 i got lazy. so a couple of the big changes i made to the interface were pushed out and i called it v3.5.

along the way i made a number of small but useful changes to the site. several more are planned in the next few months.
